Based on the novel by Sara Gruen, this drama from Constantine and I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence deals with young veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson) who, devastated by the sudden death of his parents in a car crash, abandons his studies in his final year and hops a train to nowhere in particular.
His adventure really begins when he finds out the train is part of a travelling circus and he tries to get a job with them. When August (Christoph Waltz), the head animal trainer, finds out Jacob is a veterinarian, he hires him to look after the animals.
However, Jacob soon learns that August is an abusive man, both towards the animals and humans. And when he falls for August's young wife, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), Jacob struggles to hide his feelings and to keep his job, despite the circus' money troubles and the tendency of the bosses to red-light workers (throw them off the train in the middle of the night when they no longer need them).
